NJ Gubernatorial Debate

The first gubernatorial debate between Democrat Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli is set for 7 p.m. this Sunday, September 21.

The debate will give voters their first side-by-side look at the two candidates vying to lead New Jersey for the next four years.

The debate comes just six weeks before New Jersey voters head to the polls on Tuesday, November 4.

In addition to the governor’s race, all 80 seats in the New Jersey Assembly will be on the ballot, making this election a critical moment in shaping the state’s policy direction.

What We’re Monitoring

The Legislature will soon head into its lame duck session – the hectic period between Election Day and the last day of the legislative session in January. During this time, we expect the introduction of last-minute bills, action on old bills and surprise amendments.

This is why it is vital for us to drive policy conversations and ensure our lawmakers are hearing from you.

Contribute to our advocacy political action committee today to keep our industry’s voice in the conversation.

Tip Wage Elimination: This bill is a top concern for restaurant owners statewide. Eliminating the tip wage would dramatically increase the cost of labor while simultaneously causing tipped employees to lose shifts and jobs while also limiting their earning potential.

Heat Stress Mandates: Proposed workplace legislation could require costly scheduling, training, and infrastructure changes without consideration of seasonal or small business realities. For example, restaurant kitchens could not surpass 85 degrees.

Single-Use Plastics & Utensil Bans: Legislation banning single-use utensils and condiments, unless requested by the customer, is expected to resurface. This costly measure would add even more mandates on the restaurant industry.

Hotel & Motel Guest Classification: This bill clarifies when an occupant qualifies as a residential tenant versus a transient guest – a critical safeguard for hotel and motel operators facing abuse of current law.

“Fun Tax” Revival: Though we successfully stopped the sales tax proposal on bowling, minigolf, and other recreational activities earlier this year, lame duck often resurrects ideas that didn’t advance in session.
