New Jersey drought fuels wildfires, unhealthy air quality and calls to conserve water
As wildfires burn across New Jersey, environmental officials urged residents to conserve water due to months of dry weather that have parched forests and dwindled drinking water supplies. A significant wildfire has been burning at the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Burlington County since Friday, spreading smoke to surrounding areas, according to state fire officials. Officials blamed an ongoing drought. (Asbury Park Press)
NJ's long streak of dry weather could break an elusive record
It’s now been more than three straight weeks with not even a drop of rain falling into most of the rain gauges that are spread across the Garden State. With no threats of rain in the forecast for the next six or seven days, some areas of New Jersey have a legitimate shot at setting a new mark for the most consecutive days with no measurable rain, according to a review of rainfall stats from a National Weather Service database. September home sales drop to lowest level since 2010
Sales of previously owned homes fell 1% in September compared with August, to a seasonally adjusted, annualized rate of 3.84 million units, the slowest pace since October 2010, according to the National Association of Realtors. Sales were 3.5% lower than in September 2023. The pressure of still low inventory continues to push prices higher. The median price of an existing home sold in September was $404,500, an increase of 3% year over year and the 15th consecutive month of annual price gains. (CNBC)
Denny’s says it expects to close 150 locations by the end of 2025
Denny’s says it’s closing 150 of its lowest-performing restaurants in an effort to turn around the brand’s flagging sales. About half of the closures will happen this year and the rest in 2025, the company said during a meeting with investors Tuesday. The locations weren’t revealed, but the restaurants represent around 10% of Denny’s total. (The Associated Press)
