US federal shutdown enters sixth day as threat of layoffs looms

The U.S. government shutdown entered its sixth day Monday, with Republicans and congressional Democrats still at an impasse and the White House threatening to ramp up pressure by ordering mass layoffs of federal workers. The Republican-led Senate was slated to vote again on dueling measures to fund federal agencies, including a Republican stopgap bill approved by the House of Representatives that would fund operations through Nov. 21, and a Democratic alternative. Neither was expected to receive the 60 votes needed to advance. (Reuters via Yahoo! News)

Report: Online sales this holiday to slow on economic uncertainty

U.S. holiday online sales are expected to grow at a slower pace this year, according to projections by data firm Adobe Analytics released Monday, as economic uncertainty continues to pressure consumer spending. Adobe expects U.S. online sales to rise 5.3% to $253.4 billion between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, this year, compared with an 8.7% rise last year. Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, is expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year, with sales rising 6.3% to $14.2 billion on the day, Adobe said. (Reuters via Yahoo! Mikie Sherrill frequently point to Pennsylvania as an example of good governance they’d like to emulate. The praise for Pennsylvania underscores its elevated role in American politics: It's the country’s preeminent swing state, governed by a rising political star, and now, a model of governance.
