US federal shutdown enters sixth day as threat of layoffs looms
The U.S. government shutdown entered its sixth day Monday, with Republicans and congressional Democrats still at an impasse and the White House threatening to ramp up pressure by ordering mass layoffs of federal workers. The Republican-led Senate was slated to vote again on dueling measures to fund federal agencies, including a Republican stopgap bill approved by the House of Representatives that would fund operations through Nov. 21, and a Democratic alternative. Report: Online sales this holiday to slow on economic uncertainty
U.S. holiday online sales are expected to grow at a slower pace this year, according to projections by data firm Adobe Analytics released Monday, as economic uncertainty continues to pressure consumer spending. Adobe expects U.S. online sales to rise 5.3% to $253.4 billion between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, this year, compared with an 8.7% rise last year. Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, is expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year, with sales rising 6.3% to $14.2 billion on the day, Adobe said. (Reuters via Yahoo! News)
